Serbia to challenge hosts France in Paris semifinal

Luxembourg, September 24, 2019.  Serbia and France will lock horns in the second CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men semifinal to be played on September 27 in Paris. On Tuesday evening, Serbia overpowered Ukraine in their hard-fought quarterfinal clash in Antwerp, while France cruised to a home straight-set win over Italy in Nantes.

SRB vs UKR 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 15-9) in Antwerp, Belgium

Ukraine got close to delivering a major upset in their quarterfinal match against Serbia, but managed to go as far as a tie-breaker, in which the 2017 bronze medallists finally asserted their superiority to triumph with a hard-fought victory and the spot against France in Friday’s semifinal in Paris. Serbia’s Aleksandar Atanasijevic was the top scorer of the match, on 24 points. His teammate Uros Kovacevic proved very valuable in key situations and totalled 21. Ian Iereshchenko was Ukraine’s most prolific point-maker, scoring 18 times, including four from the serving line.

 

FRA vs ITA 3-0 (25-16, 27-25, 25-14) in Nantes, France

France qualified for the semifinals of their home EuroVolley 2019 by sweeping Italy 3-0 in a quarterfinal match played in front of over seven thousand spectators at the Parc des Expositions Hall XXL in Nantes. Stephen Boyer pleased the home fans with nine aces towards a match-high of 25 points. Earvin Ngapeth added 13 points, while none of the Italian players reached the double digits.
