Slovenia stun Russia to take on Poland in EuroVolley semifinals

Luxembourg, September 23, 2019.  Slovenia and Poland will face each other in the first CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men semifinal to be played on September 26 in Ljubljana. These two squads came out as victors of Monday’s quarterfinal clashes, with Russia and Germany, respectively. The remaining two semifinalists will emerge from Tuesday’s quarterfinals, Serbia vs. Ukraine and France vs. Italy.

POL vs GER 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-18) in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands

Poland kept their medal hopes alive with a quarterfinal win over Germany. The last time Poland won a medal in this tournament was at EuroVolley 2011, when they took bronze. On Monday, the team of coach Vital Heynen was too strong for Germany, the runner-up of EuroVolley 2017. With Wilfredo Leon as the top scorer, on 18 points, Poland pleased their ‘home crowd’ in Apeldoorn with a solid 3-0 win. György Grozer of Germany also scored 18 times.

 

RUS vs SLO 1-3 (23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 21-25) in Ljubljana, Slovenia

In front of a tournament-high of 11,225 spectators, hosts Slovenia stunned Russia with a four-set victory to advance to the semifinals of EuroVolley for the second time in their history. Until this match Slovenia had not won a single set against Russia in four EuroVolley encounters between the two teams. Russia’s Victor Poletaev topped the scorers’ charts with 20 points, while Tine Urnaut claimed 13 points for the home team.
